A Summary of Episode_1_-_The_Crimson_Tyrant (Covers his establishing character arc)

Personality:

At first glance, Riddle looks like a meek little child. His PE uniform is too big (he bought a size up, hoping he would grow into it) he has boyish features and a shorter stature compared to most students, but a glance is all you'll have to perceive this notion before he will set about proving you wrong. Floyd Leech learned this firsthand, when on opening day at Orientation, he impulsively grabbed Riddle's hair and was sent magically catapulted across the room, on fire, while a pair of teacher's had to hold Riddle's temper back. For this is who Riddle is, a force to be reckoned with in a tiny package that will gladly and loudly correct anyone who assumes otherwise.

Top of his class and studious to a fault, Riddle became housewarden one week after being enrolled, he carries himself with such rigid discipline, that he might be mistaken for one of the students who are actual royalty. Prideful and fiery, he is quick to anger at any digs made at his expense and is often frustrated when others don’t put forth the same amount of effort as him. Above all else, what Riddle tolerates least is any form of rulebreaking.

Be it the Queen's, the School's, or general human decency, to Riddle, rules are everything. As Housewarden of Heartslabyul, the dorm themed around the Queen of Heart's 'Spirit of Strictness,' he takes it on himself to represent her ideals by perfectly adhering to her standards, no matter how absurd; memorizing all 810 of her utterly nonsensical rules and treating them as law. The drink after a meal MUST be lemon with two sugars (even though he prefers honey) Croquet CANNOT be played after 5:00. Following these seemingly random edicts, regardless of his own sensibilities, can make Riddle look entitled and borderline insane. Such a thing comes easy to him, however, and this entirely due to how he was raised.

The son of an accomplished medical mage, Riddle has gotten everywhere in life thanks to the rigid schedule laid out for him since birth. His Mother went to great lengths to monitor every aspect down to what he ate. Every second of every day was scheduled for learning. He never read story books, he never watched TV. All sense of identity, whimsy and want sacrificed in the pursuit of education and self-improvement.

To deviate from this structure is unthinkable and could result in the loss of everything. A lesson harshly ingrained into Riddle, when at the age of 8, he began to shirk 'independent study hour' by sneaking outside to play with two neighbor kids, Trey and Che'nya. After losing track of time trying a tart-- excess sugar being yet another thing banned-- Riddle lost the freedom to any free time, altogether.

Despite his haughty demeanor and general killjoy vibe, Riddle actually cares very much for others and how he is perceived. He does enjoy friends and is much softer and lonelier than he willfully displays; his method of forcefully helping people better themselves is simply all he has ever known and knows how to express. Once his classmates learn to get over Riddle's controlling eccentricities, there is a lot to like. He may be strict, but he is strict because he wants others to succeed.

Following the events of his Overblot- a dangerous condition inducing a destructive transformative state and mania in the user- Riddle understands he needs to change and that his former mindset was harmful to himself and others. He works to earn back the trust of his dorm and pours his passion for Rules into being a better leader. Rather than punishing someone for failing an exam, he takes time to tutor them. He becomes more lenient and willing to turn a blind eye to everything not being 'perfect' and while he still threatens plenty of punishment, he does so with the intent of imparting a lesson.

Trey tells Ace the reason he struggled to call out Riddle's earlier tyrannical behavior is because Riddle hearing his strict adherence to the rules might be wrong could lead to him rejecting who he is as a person. And quite frankly that is exactly what happens. Though Overblotting made Riddle deeply aware of how impractical his standards are, change isn’t easy. The fine line between who he wants to be and who he was made to be are a struggle for Riddle to define; too intrinsically linked to be separated now. He may have lost his childhood to endless studying, but learning is something he enjoys. Riddle does take pride in his accomplishments. Because of this he can't fully hate his mother, so much of him is her.

One of Riddle’s greatest strengths, however, is that while he never excuses his own mistakes he also never looks back. Rather than wallowing over past failure, his focus is always set on finding the next solution. Though generally helpful, in Book 6, he clashes heavily with Azul on this. To Riddle, it is a waste of time to stand around deliberating which door to go through. They could simply be getting on with it and check them all. This straightforward boldness in tandem with how easily he can be riled, makes him far more brash than expected of a valedictorian, but below his posh perfectionist attitude even Riddle is still a dumb teen at heart.

Riddle's greatest crime is that the rules he is so determined to follow are flawed from the start. The Queen of Hearts was a selfish tyrant who only created laws that benefited herself. Riddle however, has construed them into actions that dictate good study habits and discipline.

Forbidding students from lingering at a table longer than 15 minutes after eating could be encouraged as practicing good time management and keeping space freed up in the cafeteria. Forcing students on flamingo duty to wear pink might be for the animal's comfort and to encourage bonding. Even the most absurd of demands could be argued as something that helps build character; to better apply the same fastidiousness to other facets of one's life. When seen through this particular looking glass, it's easy to understand why Riddle struggles to separate necessary obligations from the mundane. After all, it got him to where he is. It appears to work, too! During Halloween, the members of Heartslabyul happily note how quickly they set up their display, thanks to the spontaneous things often expected of them.

In the end, Riddle can humorously be boiled down to someone overly 'committed to the bit'. Wearing a crown won't make him better in the courtroom if he pursues Law after graduation. Prancing about in his stiletto boots and croquet techniques won't have any bearing on how well he performs magical medical procedures, but he does these things because he simply can't do anything halfway and is truly dedicated to being the best Housewarden he can be.

For all the pride that Riddle holds for his own grades, the accomplishment he seems most proud to cite is that no one from Heartslabyul has dropped out or been held back a year ever since he took reign. Riddle acknowledges he has growing to do but Rule no. 1 states one must always 'keep moving forward to remain in place' and Riddle is never one to sit idle. To the Queen of Hearts, the Card Soldiers may have been mere servants, but Riddle understands that a real Queen is still a part of the deck.

Abilities & Inventory:

Magic in Twisted Wonderland can best be broken into types; offensive and the non-combative sort.

Much like Kingdom Hearts, Battle magic is essentially elemental rock paper scissors. Blasts of energy that can be fire, water, floral or cosmic (a neutral void or 'force' magic) used in combat. We also see a bit of healing magic thrown in (though in game mechanics it is implemented as a status buff.)

Practical Magic, which Riddle is said to excel at in particular, is more like the applied use of it for every day tasks such as levitating/manipulating an object, changing the color of something (like roses) or temporarily enchanting a broom to fly. (Though I won't abuse this too much, or at the very least lower the success rate of it working as intended. I also intend to buy back his actual broom with points in game for him to have any proficiency on one.)

Every mage also has one spell only they can do called Unique Magic. Riddle's "Off with Your Head" is essentially a magical "stop" button that can cut anyone off from their powers. It forms a heart-shaped collar around the victim's neck that only Riddle himself can remove and while said collar is in place, the user cannot use any magic whatsoever. Not only can he cast it on multiple parties, he can maintain it for days if he so intends. Of course, if the opposing mage is more powerful than him, they stand a change of deflecting it, and given that the last time Riddle went overboard with it, he overblotted, there is likely significant risk if he overdoes it. Nevertheless it is a very formidable spell he wields daily and with precision to keep people in line (which is often, considering half of NRC are delinquent in nature.) (If facing someone more than an NPC I will always work with the player. Riddle will most likely use this to apprehend guilty parties after they are defeated, rather than just swooping in and winning a fight in one move.)

The clearer the caster can visualize the effects, the more powerful spells are (which has some troubling implications for a child that themed a spell around 'decapitation' at the prodigal age of 10). Riddle is known to be one of the fastest casters at NRC and the analysis of his stats at STYX compared him to something of a glass cannon or ranged DPS unit- powerful out the gate but with poor defense.

Inventory:

Magic Pen-- Students at NRC cannot perform magic without accumulating dangerous levels of 'blot' in their bodies, this pen contains what is known as a "mage stone" which acts as a lightning rod that absorbs and neutralizes the harmful effects into itself instead. It has also been shown to allow the caster to swap between their dorm and school uniform (like in Book 6, at the STYX facility)

As a Housewarden, In his dorm uniform, Riddle's can also extend into a staff he wields in battle.

ARMADA SELECTION

Paladin Riddle is the most Paladinny-Paladin-to-ever-Paladin! With his obsession to not just follow rules but also make sure OTHERS adhere to a sense of order, he's a shoe-in for the law-abiding armada. As set in stone as it is that he was blatantly born to be sorted into Heartslabyul, there is little doubt that Riddle belongs with the Paladins.
